Twitch Username Change Step-by-Step

21 September 2021

Getting the name of your Twitch channel just right is crucial for your channel’s success: to have people find you in the search, to have a recognizable brand, etc.

If you still have a default username from back when you created your account, it’s time to change it!

Find out how to change your username with our Twitch Username Change Tutorial.

Steps to Change your Twitch Username

Choosing a new name for your Twitch channel is simple. You can do it on the website or by using the app.

1 Log in to Twitch.tv

You’ll need to have a Twitch account to access this part of the platform.

2 Go to your profile

To access your Twitch profile, you can use this link or click on your channel icon > Settings.

3 Click on your username

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see your Twitch username, your public name and your bio. Click on your username, which is what we’re looking at right now.

4 Enter your new name

You can now enter your new username and select it for your channel.

Click on “Update”, and you’ve now changed your Twitch username for your channel.

What to Know Before Changing your Username on Twitch

We’ve put together a few important points to bear in mind if you’re looking for a Twitch username change.

Regardless of whether you’ve changed your brand name, you want to add some info or a nickname, don’t miss these out!

✅ Have a good think about your Twitch username because you won’t be able to change it again for 60 days.

For 6 months, no one will be able to claim your old username. Once that’s over, anyone can have it.

✅ Your Twitch username will be instantly updated. As such, make perfectly sure that you’ve entered it correctly without any typos.

✅ The URL with your old Twitch username will not redirect to the new one. In other words, if you want to share your channel, you’ll have to use the new URL.

✅ Changing the name of your channel does not affect the income you have generated at all. It could affect the adverts you make on the day you change it that come from viewers on game consoles or Android TV.

A Twitch username change will not lift any temporary or permanent bans you might have. Even if you change it, sanctions will remain in place.

✅ Changing your Twitch username does not affect your public name. If you want to change it, you need to do it in the correct box.

✅ Some of the bots you have included on your Twitch channel for chat or commands could lose their connection when you change your username: go to their website and connect them again.

✅ A username that has been banned from the platform cannot be used, and you will never have access to them.

Now you know how a Twitch username change works so you can do it without any problems. Take these points into consideration so that you don’t have any issues with your new username.

TIP 💡

If you have changed the name of your Twitch channel, we recommend letting your followers know on social media.

By doing this, you’ll keep them up to date on the changes, and when they get an email notification about you going live, they’ll know it’s you.
